She had not waited long before the captain of the robbers got up, opened the
window, and finding no light, and hearing no noise, or any one stirring in the
house, gave the appointed signal, by throwing little stones, several of which
hit the jar, as he doubted not by the sound they gave.
モルギアナが待つ間もなく、賊の統領は起き上がって窓を開けたが、燈火も見えず、物音
も聞こえず、家の中が、ひっそりしているので、小石を投げて手筈の合図をしまし,その
中の幾つかは音がしたので、袋に当たったものと分かった。
非常にびっくりして、頭領はそっと中庭へ降りて行って、第一番の袋の所に来て用意は
よいかと、生きているつもりで中の賊に尋ねると、煮え油の臭いがして、袋からは湯気
が立ち上った。
そこで、頭領はアリババを殺してこの家を略奪をしようとした計画が露見したものと
分かりました。
Examining all the jars, one after another, he found that all his gang were
dead ; and, enraged to despair at having failed in his design, he forced the
lock of a door that led from the yard to the garden, and climbing over the
walls made his escape.
なお、残らずの袋を一つ一つ調べてみると、自分の手下は皆死んでいた。それで、
自分の計画の失敗にむしゃくしゃ腹を立て、中庭から裏庭へ導く戸の錠を破って
塀を乗り越えて逃げ去った。
When Morgiana saw him depart, she went to bed satisfied and pleased to
have succeeded so well in saving her master and family.
モルギアナは頭領が出て行ったのを見て、主人一家を見事に救う事が出来た事
に大満足して寝床に入った。
Ali Baba rose before day, and, followed by his shave, went to the baths,
ignorant of the event which had happened at home.
When he returned from the baths, he was very much suｒprised to see the oil-jars that
the merchant was not gone with the mules.
湯から帰ってきたアリババは、袋が皆そのまま置いてあり、また、商人がロバを曳いて
行かなかったのを見て驚いた。
He asked Morgiana, who opened the door, the reason of it. "My good master," answered
she, "God preserve you and all your family. You will be better informed of what you wish
to know when you have seen what I have to show you."
アリババは、戸を開けたモルギアナに、その理由を尋ねた、彼女は答えて 「あなた様や
皆様方の御息災を祈ります。まア、私が今、お目にかける物を御覧になれば、どうした訳
か、その方が、よくお分かりになりましょうよ。」
As soon as Morgiana had shut the door, Ali Baba followed her, when she requested him to
look into the first jar and see if there was any oil.
モルギアナが戸を閉めるとすぐ、アリババはその後について来た、そして彼女は一番初めの
袋に油が入っているかどうか覗いてごらんなさいと彼に言った。
Ali Baba did so, and seeing a man, stated back in alarm, and cried out. "Do not be afraid," said
Morgiana, "the man you see there is dead."
アリババは、彼女の言う通りにすると、人が入っているので、驚いて飛び下がり声を上げ
た。モルギアナは「まあ、怖くありません、あの人は死んでますよ。」と言った。
"Ah, Morgiana," said Ali Baba, "What is it you show me? Explain yourself." "I will,"
replied Morgiana. "Moderate your astonishment, and do not excite the curiosity of
your neighbors; for it is of great importance to keep this affair secret. Look in
to all the other jars."
アリババは、「ああ、モルギアナ、これはどうした訳かい、話しておくれ」と言った。モル
ギアナは答えて「よろしゅうございます、まあお聞きなさいませ、近所の方に気が付かれる
といけません、この事は是非内緒にしなければなりませんから。ほかの袋も残らず覗いて御
覧なさいませ。」と言った。
Ali Baba examined all the other jars, one after another ; and when he came to
that which had the oil in, found it prodigiously sunk, and stood for some time
motionless, without saying a word, so great was his surprise.
アリババは他の袋を一つ一つ、皆、見て回って、油の入った袋へ来てみると、油はひど
く少なくなっているので、しばらくの間、身動きもせず、ものも言わず立っていた。
At last, when he had recovered himself, he said, "And what is become of the
merchant?"
ようやく、我に返ったアリババは、「それで、商人はどうなった？」と、聞きました。
"Merchant !" answered she ; "he is as much one as I am. I will tell you who he is, and what
is become of him ; but you had better hear the story in your own chamber."
「商人ですって！」とモルギアナは答えた。「何が商人なものですか、やつが何者で、どうなった
か、お話もうしましょう。しかし、マア、自分の部屋へお帰りになってから、その話をお聞きになっ
た方がよろしゅうございます。」
Morgiana then told him all she had done, from the first observing the mark upon the house,
to the destruction of the robbers, and the flight of their captain.
モルギアナは、そこで主人に向かって、最初、家に印を付けてあったのを見つけた事から、賊
を皆殺しにした事、頭領が逃げて行った事まで、自分がした事を一つの落ちもなく話した。
On hearing of these brave deeds from the lips of Morgiana. Ali Baba said to her : "Good, by
your means, has delivered me from the snares these robbers laid for my destruction. I owe,
therefore, my life to you ; and, for the first token on my acknowledgment, give you your liberty
from this moment."
モルギアナの口から、これらの勇ましい話を聞いてアリババは次の様に言った。「神様がお前
をお使いなされて、盗賊が仕掛けた罠から私をお助け下されたのだ。だから、お前の御蔭で命
拾いが出来たのだ、当座の礼の印に、今からお前の身を自由にしてやろう。」
Ali Baba's garden was very long, and shaded at the farther end by a great number of large trees.
アリババの裏庭は大層長くて、ずっと向うの端には大木が沢山あって蔭を作っていた。
Near these he and the shave, Abdalla, dug a trench, long and wide enough to hold the bodies of
the robbers.
その側へ、アリババは、奴隷のアブダラ手伝わせて賊どもの死骸を納められるだけに長く広い壕
を掘った。
When this was done, Ali Baba hid the jars and weapons ; and as he had no occasion for the mules,
he sent them at different times to be sold in the market by his slave.
埋めてしまってから、袋や武器はこれを隠したが、ロバは使い道がないので、何回にも分けて、奴隷
に市場へ売りに行かせた。
While Ali Baba took these measures, the captain of the forty robbers returned to the forest with
inconceivable mortification.
アリババがこれらの処置を行っている間に、４０人の盗賊の頭領は、何とも言えない怒りを感じなが
ら、森へ帰って行った。
He did not stay long ; the loneliness of the gloomy cavern became frightful to him.
でも、頭領は長くはそこに留まっていなかった。陰気な洞窟内の寂しさが、恐ろしくなって来たのだ。
He determined, however, to avenge the fate of his companions, and to accomplish the death
of Ali Baba.
しかしながら彼は手下の者共の仇を返し、アリババを殺してしまわねば承知せぬと覚悟を定め
た。
For this purpose he returned to the town, and took a lodging in a khan, and disguised himself
as a merchant in silks.
この目的を果たすために、頭領は再び町へ取って返し、ある旅宿に宿を定め、絹商人の姿へと
変装しました。
Under this assumed character, he gradually conveyed a great many sorts of rich stuffs and
fine linen to his lodging from the cavern.
そう見せかけておいて、彼は種々の高価な絹物や上等の麻布をボツボツと洞窟から旅宿へ持
ち運んだ。
In order to dispose of the merchandise, when he had thus amassed them together, he took
a warehouse, which happened to be opposite to Cassim's which Ali Baba's son had occupied
since the death of his uncle.
品物の移動が終わって、これらの商品を売りさばくために、一つの店を借りたが、偶然
にもその家はカシムの持ち家で、今はアリババの息子が、叔父が死んでから住んでいる
家のすぐ向かい側であった。
He took the name of Cogia Houssain, and, as a new comer, was, according to custom, extremely
civil and complaisant to all the merchants his neighbors.
彼はコジア・ホウセーィンと名乗り、新しい店の常として、隣・近所の商人たちには誰にも、いたって
親切.丁寧にしました。
Ali Baba's son was, from his vicinity, one of the first to converse with Cogia Houssain, who strove
to cultivate his friendship more particularly.
アリババの息子はつい近所なので、彼と第一に口をきき始めた一人で、コジア・ホウセーィンの方で
は、とりわけ彼と懇意になろうと努めた。
Two or three days after he was settled, Ali Baba came to see his son, and the captain of the
robbers recogniｚed him at once, and soon learned from his son who he was.
彼が住居を定めてから２～３日すると、アリババは息子に会いに来た、賊の統領は一目見て、
それと気付いたが、息子の話で、その父親である事を知った。
After this he increased his assiduities, caressed him in the most engaging manner, made him
some small presents, and often asked him to dine and sup with him.
その後というものは息子に対して、前にもまして心を尽くし、息子を厚遇して、進物を送ったり
あるいは時々招待して食事を共にしたりした。
