Ali Baba's son did not choose to lie under such obligation to Cogin Houssain ; but was so much
straitened for want of room that he could not entertain him.
アリババの息子はコジア・ホウセーィンからあまり厚意を受けて居るのを好まなかったが、何しろ
家が狭くて彼に御馳走する事が出来ない。
He, therefore, acquainted his father ; Ali Baba, with his wish to invite him in return.
息子は、父のアリババに、コジア・ホウセーィンを返礼の為に招待したいと話しました。
Ali Baba with great pleasure took the treat upon himself.
するとアリババは、大喜びで、その饗応（宴会）を自分で引き受けた。
"Son," said he, "tomorrow being Friday, which is a day that the shops of such great merchants
as Cogia Housain and yourself are shut, get him to accompany you, and as you pass by my door,
call in. I will go and order Morgiana to provide a supper."
そして、アリババは次の様に言った 「倅や、明日は金曜日で、コジア・ホウセーィンや、お前の様な
大商人の店は休みだから、あの人を連れ出して、私の家の前を通りかかったら寄るがいい、私は
帰って、モルギアナに言いつけて、晩餐の支度をさせよう。」
The next day Ali Baba's son and Cogia Houssain met by appointment, took their walk, and as they
returned, Ali Baba's son led Cogia Houssain through the street where his father lived, and when
they came to the house, stopped and knocked at the door.
翌日アリババの息子とコジア・ホウセーィンとは打ち合わせておいて散歩にでかけたが、その帰りが
けにアリババの息子はコジア・ホウセーィンを連れて父の住んでいる街を通った、そして父の家の前
に来ると立ち止まって戸を叩いた。
"This, sir," said he, "is my father's house, who, from the account I have given him of your friendship,
charged me to procure him the honor of your acquaintance ; and I desire you to add this pleasure
to those for which I am already indebted to you."
「これが、あなた」と、彼は言いました、「父の家です、父は私が貴方の御親切を話したもの
ですから、是非お近きになりたいと私に頼みます。で、今までも、もう色々とお世話になって
いますが、この事一つ、お聞き届けを御願いします。」
Ali Baba received Cogia Houssain with a smiling countenance, and in the most obliging manner he
could wish.
アリババは、笑顔で丁重に丁重を期してコジア・ホウセーィンを迎えた。
He thanked him for all the favours he had done his son ; adding withal, the obligation was the
greater as he was a young man, not much acquainted with the world.
アリババはコジア・ホウセーィンに、息子が様々と厄介になった礼を述べ、更に息子が
世間の事は余り知らない若輩者だけに、取り分け有難いと言いました。
Cogia Houssain assured Ali Baba that though his son might not have acquired the experience
of older men, he had good sense equal to the experience of many others.
コジア・ホウセーィンはアリババに御子息は年上の者ほどにには未だ御経験を積んでないと言わ
れるが、大抵の人の経験に劣らないだけの分別を持っておられると答えた。
After a little more conversation on different subjects, be offered to take his leave, when Ali
Baba, stopping him, said.
なおしばらく、よもやま話をした後に、暇を告げようとすると、アリババは、これを引き留めて、
次の様に言った。
"Where are you going, sir, in so much haste? I beg you would do me the honour to sup with
me." "Sir," replied Cogia Houssain, "I am thoroughly persuaded of your good-will ; but the
truth is, I can eat no victuals that have any salt in them ; therefore judge how I should feel
at your table."
「貴方がたいそうお急ぎで、何処かへお出かけになるのですか？ どうぞ一緒に晩飯を食べて
下さいまし」と言った。コジア・ホウセーィンはこれに答えて「あなたの御厚意は誠にありがたい
のですが、実の所、私は、塩断ちをしているので、せっかく頂戴したいにも具合が悪いの
で、御察し願います」と言った。
"If that is the only reason," said Ali Baba, "it ought not to deprive me of the honor of your
company ; for, in the first place, there is no salt ever put into my bread, and as to the meat
we shall have to-night, I promise you there shall be none in that.
Therefore you must do me the favor to stay."
するとアリババは、「それだけの事でしたら是非とも御相伴を願わねばなりません。何故と申し
ますと、先ず第一に宅のパンは何時も塩を入れておりません、それに、今晩の食事の肉には
決して塩を入れぬ事に致します。ですからどうぞ ごゆるりとなさって下さい。」と言った。
Ali Baba went into the kitchen, and ordered Morgiana to put no salt to the meat that was to
be dressed that night ; and to make quickly two or three ragouts besides what he had ordered,
but be sure to put no salt in them.
アリババは台所へ出て行ってモルギアナに、今夜の肉には少しも塩を入れるな、そして、言いつ
けた品の他に、急いでシチューを２つ３つ添えろ、しかし、これにも、決して塩を入れぬ様にせい
と命じた。
Morgiana, who was always ready to obey her master, could not help being surprised at his strange
order.
モルギアナは何時も主人の言いつけに背いた事はないのだが、この奇妙な注文を聞いて、驚かず
にはいられなかった。
"Who is this strange man," said she, "who eats no salt with his meat? Your supper will be spoiled,
is I keep it back so long."
それで、モルギアナは 「塩を入れないで肉を食べようという変わったお客様は、いったいどなたなの
です そう、遅らせて、夕食がまづくなります」 と言った。
"Do not be angry, Morgiana," replied Ali Baba ; "he is an honest man, therefore do as I bid you."
アリババは 「モルギアナや、そう腹を立てるな。お客は別に胡乱（うろん）な方ではないから、まあ
言う通りにしろ。」と答えた。.
Morgiana obeyed, and had a curiosity to see this man who ate no salt.
モルギアナは主人の言う通りにしたが、塩を食べない、この男を見たいという好奇心を
持ちました。
To this end, when she had finished what she had to do in the kitchen, she helped Abdalls to
carry up the dishes ; and looking at Cogia Houssan, knew him, notwithstanding his disguise,
to be the captain of the rubbers, and examining him very carefully, perceived that he had
a dagger under his garment.
それで、台所の自分の用事が片付くとアブダラの手伝いをして、料理の皿を運んで行った、
そしてコジア・ホウセーィンを見るや変装こそ違っているが、直ちに例の賊の統領だと分か
った、なお、気を付けて見ると、着物の下に短剣を持っているのを見抜いた。
"I am not in the least amazed," said she to herself, "that this wicked man, who is my
master's greatest enemy, would eat no salt with him, since he intends to assassinate him ;
out I will prevent him."
「ちっとも不思議はないさ」 と 彼女は独り言を言った。 「御主人の大敵の この悪人が
塩を食べないのは、御主人を殺そうと企んでいるからだ、でも私は邪魔をしてやるから。」
Morgiana determined in her own mind to execute one of the boldest acts ever meditated.
モルギアナは、これまでに思い付きもしなかった程、最も大胆な事を実行しようと、
思いを定めました。
with a silver-gilt girdle, to which there hung a poniard with a hilt of the same metal, and put
a handsome mask on her face.
アブダラが食後の菓子を取りに行って、それをアリババの前に、葡萄酒やコップと共に置いた
時、モルギアナは引き下がって、踊り子のように頭飾りを付け、腰には銀色の帯を巻き、それ
に銀色の柄のある短剣を下げ、顔には美しい面をかぶった。
When she had thus disguised herself she said to Abdalla, "Take your tabor, and let us go and
divert our master and his son's friend, as we do sometimes when he is alone."
そのように、自分の姿を変えてから、彼女はアブダラに言いました。「お前さんが小太
鼓持っておいで、そしてお客様が時々一人の時に、旦那様と息子さんの友達の御機嫌を
とろうじやないか。」
Abdalla took his tabor and played all the way into the hall before Morgiana, who, when she came
to the door, made a low obeisance by way of asking leave to exhibit her skill, while Abdalla left
off playing, Come in, Morgiana," said Ali Baba, "and let Cogia Houssain see what your can do."
アブダラは小鼓を取ってモルギアナの先に立ち、座敷へ行く途中、絶えず囃子たてた。戸口へ来
ると、モルギアナは、まずい芸ではございますが、御覧くださいませと、お辞儀をした。その間、ア
ブダラは小鼓を止めた。アリババは「モルギアナよ、さあ入ってコジア・ホウセーィン様に、お前の
やれる事をごらんに入れるがよい。」 と 声をかけた。
Cogia Houssain, who did not expect this diversion after supper, began to fear he should not be
able to take advantage of the opportunity he thought he had found ; but hoped, if he now missed
his aim, to secure it another time, by keeping up a friendly correspondence with the father and
son ; therefore he pretended to be obliged to him for it, and had the complaisance to express his
satisfaction at what he saw, which pleased his host.
コジア・ホウセーィンは夕食の後この様な余興があろうとは思いもしなかったので、折角見
つけた好機会を逃しはしないかと恐れ始めましたが、今 本望を遂げずとも、この父子と交
際を続けておいて、又の機会に仕遂げてやろうとの望みを抱いたので、それは有難い事であ
る。と、言い繕って、結構な見世物のであると挨拶して、主人を喜ばせた。
As soon as Abdalla saw that Ali Baba and Cogia Houssain had done talking, he began to play on
the tabor, to which Morgiana, who was an excellent performer, danced in such a manner as would
have created admiration in any company
アブダラは、主人のアリババと客のコジア・ホウセーィンの話が済んだのを見ると、直ちに、小鼓を
打ち始め、舞上手のモルギアナはこれに合わせて踊ったが、その妙技は どういう人の前に出して
も恥ずかしくないものであった。
After she had danced several dances with much grace, she drew the poniard, and holding it in her
hand, began a dance, in which the outdid herself by light movements, and the surprising leaps with
which she accompanied it.
とても優美に幾つもの踊りを踊ってから、彼女は短剣を抜き、そして、それを手に持って彼女は又も
踊り始めたが、これは 彼女には過ぎた出来栄えで 舞うにつれて あるいは軽く動き あるいは高々
と蹴り上がった。
Sometimes she presented the poniard to one breast, sometimes to another, and oftentimes seemed
to strike her own.
あるいは短剣を一人の胸に、ある時は他の胸に刺す真似をし、更にまた時々 自分の胸を突くように
して見せました。
At last, she snatched the tabor from Abdalla with her left hand, and holding the dagger in her light,
presented the other side of the tabor, after the manner of those who get a livelihood by dancing,
and solicit the liberality of the spectators.
終には、左手でｱﾌﾞﾀﾞﾗから小鼓を奪い取り、右手には剣をにぎって、舞踏を生業として見物人の
喜捨を求める者のような恰好で、鼓の裏を差し出した。
Ali Baba put a piece of gold into the tabor, as did also his son ; and Coia Houssain had pulled
his purse out of his bosom ; but while be was putting his hand into it, Morgiana, with a courage
and resolution worthy of herself, plunged the poniard into his heart.
すると、アリババは、金貨を１枚 鼓に入れてやり、息子もその通りにした。そして、コジア・ホウ
セーィンも懐の中から財布を取りだしたが、彼が手を入れている間にモルギアナは彼女相応な
男気と決心とを以って短剣を彼の胸に突きこんだ。
Ali Baba and his son, shocked at this action, cried out aloud. "Unhappy women !" exclaimed
Ali Baba, "what have you done to ruin me and my family ?"
アリババと息子は、この振舞いに仰天して、大声をあげた。アリババは 「見下げた奴め 何を
したんだ。俺ら一家破滅だぞ！」 と叫んだ 。
"It was to preserve, not to ruin you," answered Morgiana ; "for see here," continued she, opening
the pretended Cogia Houssain's garment, and showing the dagger, "what an enemy you have
entertained!" Look well at him, and you will find him to be both the fictitious oil merchant and
the captain of the gang of forty robbers.
モルギアナは これに応えて「破滅どころか お前様を お助け申したさに致しました」と言ったが
「これを 御覧なさりませ」 と言葉を繋ぎ、まやかし者のコジア・ホウセーィンの衣を開いて その
短剣を見せ「御馳走なさったのは お前様の仇敵ではございませんか よく こやつを御覧なさい
ませ あの えせ 油商人で また４０人の盗賊の頭だと おわかりございましょう。
Remember, too, that he would eat no salt with you ; and what would you have more to persuade
you of his wicked design ?
それに、こやつが お前様と一緒に塩を食べまいとしたことを思い合わせなされたら、その
企みに合点が参りましょう。
Before I saw him, I suspected him as soon as you told me you had sucha guest."
お前様が、そのような客がいると おっしゃつた時 私は彼を見ないうちから怪しい奴だと
思いました。」
